The London Couny Council appointed Ernő Goldfinger to a list of approved architects for the council’s housing schemes in 1961, and commissioned him to design two housing estates – Edenham in Kensington, which became known as Cheltenham Estate, and Brownfield Estate in Poplar, east London, best known for the Grade II listed Balfron Tower, which Goldfinger drew on in his later design for Trellick Tower.
Edenham Way shows off the skill of Goldfinger's team in outstanding use of concrete and planning of affordable council housing. While less famous than the neighbouring Trellick Tower it is a crucial part of the Cheltenham Estate and deserves to be better known and understood.
In February 2024 the Edenham Way Community Kitchen Garden underwent a long awaited refurbishment which replaced the paving and ten allocated plots but also incorporated a new social area and two large community plots.
In its first year the Garden was awarded ‘Outstanding’ by the RHS London in bloom awards and 1st place in its category at the Brighter Kensington and Chelsea Awards.
