About

Overview

A walking tour exploring the 1930s art deco and modernist architecture of Hampstead Garden Suburb, led by Joe Mathieson of the Hampstead Garden Suburb Trust.

The Suburb was first designated a Conservation Area in 1968, is protected by an Article 4 direction, and includes some exceptionally well-preserved buildings from the interwar period.

The walk will explore the suburban 'streamline moderne' architecture of the speculative builders who toned down the International Style. We will look at the typology of the art deco house, which combined the traditional and the modern in a new way, especially with the use of steel windows.

Highlights of the tour include East Finchley tube station (Charles Holden, 1939), Belvedere Court (Ernst Freud, 1938), Kingsley Close (Welch, Cachemaille-Day & Lander, 1934) and Lytton Close (G. G. Winbourne, 1935).
