The garden is adjacent to a nature reserve (formally a Victorian gravel pit) which is 5m lower than the garden. This resulted in severe subsidence of the land and the old summer house becoming unstable and dangerous. A retaining wall was built along the whole length of the garden (30m) and formed in an 'L' shape, 1.5m wide and 1.5m tall. The new summer house had to be built on 10m piles to rest on rock for stability and built off a concrete deck.
