This project involves the remodelling of a two storey upper maisonette near the Arsenal
Stadium.
The original flat featured a dark entrance stairway, from the communal entrance, leading to
two bedrooms on the first floor, and a kitchen and living room on the second.
Initially the owner just wanted to improve the kitchen, and possibly open up between the
kitchen and living room. Extending into the loft space was also considered.
Many possible layouts were explored before deciding on completely opening up the top
floor, creating an open plan kitchen / dining / living space, with an open stairway leading to
it.
It was also decided to put in a glass landing to the open stairway, allowing daylight down to
the entrance.
A new, finely crafted Douglas Fir stair screen connects the various levels, acting as
handrail, balustrade, and fire wall.
Tall floor to ceiling doors were installed on the bedroom level, accentuating the loftiness of
the spaces, and allowing more light through.
The kitchen is Knott Architects designed, with dyed concrete worktops, and birch ply units.
The Client was able to make it entirely bespoke, to their requirements, including a bridging
shelf across the rear window, providing a place to perch and watch the world outside.
