About

Discover St Peter’s Walworth: Before the Transformation

Be part of the story.
St Peter’s Walworth is preparing for a once-in-a-generation restoration and renewal through the Building Beyond: Soane Reimagined project — a major heritage campaign supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Before the scaffolding goes up, this is your chance to experience the church in its current form:
🔸 A rare surviving Grade I-listed church by visionary architect Sir John Soane
🔸 A living landmark of local stories, wartime resilience, and community strength
🔸 A place where art, architecture, and activism meet

Come walk the aisles, explore the crypt, hear the bells, and take a moment to reflect in one of London’s most remarkable spaces — before its next chapter begins.

Share Your Story: Shape the Future

The Building Beyond: Soane Reimagined project isn’t just about restoring a church — it’s about bringing Walworth’s past and future together.

We want to hear from you — whether you’re a lifelong local, a curious newcomer, or someone with a memory of St Peter’s to share.

💬 What does Walworth mean to you?
📸 Do you have photos, memories, or family stories linked to the church?
🌱 What would make this space feel more open, more creative, more yours?

This is your chance to shape how St Peter’s Walworth evolves as a space for worship, culture, community, and heritage. Your voice matters — and we’re listening.

Together, we’re not just restoring a building — we’re restoring connection.

Sir John Soane’s Legacy Lives Here

Step inside St Peter’s Walworth — and step into the mind of one of Britain’s most original architects: Sir John Soane.

Famed for the Bank of England, Dulwich Picture Gallery, and his own extraordinary house-museum in Lincoln’s Inn Fields, Soane designed just three churches — and St Peter’s is the best preserved.

🌀 Light, geometry, and clean classical lines
⚖️ Built to serve a growing urban community after the Napoleonic Wars
🏛️ A Grade I-listed masterpiece that speaks of both elegance and purpose

As part of the Building Beyond: Soane Reimagined project, we’re not only restoring this rare gem — we’re reconnecting it with Soane’s wider architectural legacy.

Come experience it for yourself — and help us bring Soane’s vision into the 21st century.
