About

Medieval Graffiti

Was Kilroy or Banksy ever in Great St. Bart's? Probably not, but other graffiti artists and creators sure were! Join us for a discussion of graffiti through time, learn about its different uses, how it's evolved, and how people have used it to express themselves over the centuries. We'll also take a look at the writings and drawings on the wall in St. Bartholomew the Great and learn about what graffiti tells us about the people of the past.

A family and student-friendly workshop where we learn to look for graffiti in the church.

Dr. Crystal Hollis earned her PhD in 2024 at the University of Exeter. Her work focuses on historic graffiti in churches and cathedrals. She has worked on buildings all over the country, including St. Bartholomew the Great, Southwark Cathedral, and Exeter Cathedral.
