History

Southlands Arts Centre is one of Hillingdon's finest historic buildings and an important example of domestic Queen Anne Revival architecture. The Grade II listed house was built in the late 19th century as a substantial private residence, reflecting the growing prosperity of the area as improved transport links encouraged wealthy families to settle on the rural edge of London.

Designed in the Queen Anne Revival style, the building is characterised by its red-brick construction, decorative chimneys, tall sash windows, gabled rooflines and elegant detailing. Popular from the 1870s onwards, the style looked back to English architecture of the early 18th century while incorporating modern Victorian ideas of comfort and craftsmanship. Southlands retains many of its original architectural features, giving visitors a glimpse into the design of a high-status suburban home of the period.

Southlands Art Centre Today

Over the course of the 20th century, the house passed through several phases of use, reflecting the changing needs of the local community. Rather than being lost to redevelopment, it was preserved and adapted, ensuring the survival of both the building and its historic character.

Today, Southlands Arts Centre is owned and managed by the London Borough of Hillingdon and has become one of the borough's leading cultural venues. Its historic rooms now provide space for exhibitions, workshops, performances and community events, allowing visitors to experience the building as both a heritage asset and a living centre for creativity.

The careful adaptation of Southlands demonstrates how historic buildings can be given new life while respecting their architectural significance. As a Grade II listed building, it remains protected for its special architectural and historic interest, standing as an important part of Hillingdon's built heritage and a testament to the borough's commitment to conserving its historic environment.
