About

About the tour

Flavours of Royal Docks: Food, Architecture & Memory is a participatory walking tour exploring how London's food infrastructure shaped the Royal Docks and the communities around it.

Across ten historic stops, participants trace the journey of food from ship to table, visiting docks, warehouses, grain silos, flour mills, refrigeration facilities and industrial landmarks including Millennium Mills and Tate & Lyle. Together, these places reveal how architecture, global trade and everyday life became deeply connected through food.

Along the route, participants are invited to experience the landscape through sensory activities, oral history conversations and shared storytelling. Rather than simply looking at buildings, the tour encourages visitors to discover how the built environment preserves stories of migration, labour, industry and community memory.

What to expect

This is a guided walking tour lasting approximately 2 hours (around 4 km) with regular stops for discussion and storytelling.

The experience includes optional sensory activities, such as smelling spices and tea, handling ingredients and, where appropriate, tasting food samples. Participants will also be invited to contribute their own food memories to a travelling community archive, allowing each tour to build upon stories shared by previous visitors.

Meeting point

Meet outside London City Hall (The Crystal), next to Royal Victoria DLR Station.

The tour finishes near King George V Dock.

Clothing & Footwear
