dwell-ing architecture workshop, 2018
1a Eastbourne Road, E6 6AU
This house was built by its owners (2018-2022), which creates an acute sense of ownership and connection to the neighbourhood. It shows how small and redundant sites could be used to provide high quality and sustainable places to dwell.

In building this house we aspired to create an ingenious place to dwell, that at first might not fit within the conventions of living or working, but that is mindful of its environment.
We do not expect to change human’s perception of the environment, instead, we aspired to create architecture that adapts and grows in tandem with their way of life, whilst giving an opportunity to nature to regenerate. Creating a horizontal and equal relationship between humans and nature.
Originally the land contained the rear garden of an end terrace house, however around the early '80s, it was converted into a storage/shed/garage. Although this house sits lower and sets back from the adjacent terrace house, it does not borrow alignments from it, rather it is simple in form and decoration, hinting at its industrial past and providing a contemporary contrast to the terrace.
This house spreads over the basement, ground and first floor and it shows how small redundant sites can be used to provide high-quality sustainable design for residential use.
A fundamental aspect of the design was to introduce a green roof, a green wall and a landscaped garden to enable nature to propagate and reclaim part of our urban environment. We introduced a series of openings that could enable inhabitants to contemplate, connect and understand these new natural spaces constantly evolving.
