A Greener Hackney

Hackney Council has recently launched its Climate Action Plan alongside other initiatives such as Hackney's Green Investment and Light and Power. Hackney's residents, businesses and Cultural Institutions are taking Environmental Responsibility into their hands also! From Circular Economy projects, to reconnecting people with inner city green spaces, and from low impact building solutions to sustainable future thinking.

Abney Park Open Day

Join our open tours to explore the newly restored Chapel at Abney Park and hear about the restoration process from Kaner Olette architects and stained glass artist, Piotr Frac. Kaner Olette will give talks about the sustainable build of our new community rooms, cafe and artist workshops, with Russell Miller sharing how the project achieved a net gain in biodiversity though planting a green roof.

In this street-facing space in Hackney Downs, we sought to fit out the spaces as economically and sustainably as possible, with low carbon, #nomoregas initiative and reused material strategies, while embracing a bold use of colour.

Winner of the Environmental Leadership Prize in the 2024 Don't Move Improve Awards, House Made by Many Hands is the first building structure in the UK to specify low-carbon LC3 concrete, together with hand-cast hempcrete walls, a hardwood frame in place of traditional steel, natural materials throughout and a rigorous policy of reuse and recycling for the interior.

From 5 to 9 pm Thursday 19 September 2024 the Hackney Wick and Fish Island Community Development Trust and Arbeit will be opening Hackney’s first-of-its-kind circular economy hub ‘The Loop’ to the public. This event will give full access to studios filled with local circular economy leaders, a free-to-attend exhibition and workshops.
