Van de Velde Tour and visit on the Loggia

We will be running our usually paid Van de Veldes tour for free over the weekend. This includes some history of the house but is an depth look at our current exhibition written and given by a member of the visitor and sales team. As part of this visitors on the tour are able to step out onto the Loggia overlooking Greenwich Park and the Observatory. A space that is not open to the general public.

Due to Health and Safety restrictions children under 12 are unable to go out onto the Loggia.

Free Talks

We will also aim to have a few informal talks and gallery favourites throughout the day covering a range of subjects from the architecture of the house to the Kings and Queen's that graced it's halls. Our visitor and sales team are passionate and love to share the history of the house with those that visit.

Drawing Workshop

We will also be hosting our drop in drawing workshop which takes place on a stage in our shop. Join a member of staff and draw portraits of famous Kings and Queen's.

Storytelling Workshop

Join a member of our team as they tell a story from on of our children's books in the shop.

We are aiming to do four free guided tours that are normally paid with which we can offer max up to 25 people on each. We will also have drop in talks run by the Visitor and Sales team on specific subjects for people to drop into.

Sir Christopher Wren's riverside masterpiece in Greenwich, built as the Royal Hospital for Seamen and begun in 1696.

Old Royal Naval College - Queen Anne Court

Wren and Hawksmoor building, completed 1749 when Thomas Ripley built the pavilions facing the river. Highlights include council boardroom, grand staircase and restored Portland stonework. Refurbished in 2000 for University of Greenwich.

Old Royal Naval College - Queen Mary Court

Last major building on the site (1751). Original layout, timber panelling, barrel vaulting and Portland stone. Refurbished in 2000 by Dannatt Johnson for University of Greenwich.

Wren-designed building completed under the direction of Hawksmoor and Vanbrugh, 1698-1712. Original wood panelling, refurbished by Dannatt Johnson in 2001 for University of Greenwich.

Devonport Mausoleum

Beautiful mausoleum in former Royal Navy cemetery, restored 1999 by the University of Greenwich. Many interesting plaques and grave stones.

The building features a limestone exterior designed to 'complement but not mimic' the surrounding historical architecture, whilst behind the façade is a 4-storey composition of steel, glass and exposed concrete.
