For hundreds of years, Spitalfields has been a place where those seeking safety, work, and community have settled. They all leave their mark in streets buildings in an area rich in history and architectural interest.

How can architecture help us to understand a world in flux? We can use buildings as markers of change, seeing the impact of global economic shifts on local streets, the rise and fall of public housing, and the march of 'gentrification'.

Built as a Huguenot chapel in 1763, the building has been in continuous use as a synagogue since 1860 and retains many original features including the gallery. Oldest remaining Ashkenazi synagogue in London and third oldest in the country.

Coopers' Hall is a late 17th century, timber-framed merchant's house with a Georgian frontage. A Livery Hall since 1957, it features a fine Courtoom, dining room and an impressive staircase spiralling up the entire height of the building.

Livery Hall first built in 1429, much altered then demolished and rebuilt in 1880, destroyed in 1941 except for external walls (W W Pocock). Designed as a showpiece for the craft of carpentry, the third Hall on the site.

New Livery Hall behind a retained early 20th century façade. This is the seventh Hall in the Leathersellers' Company's history since its foundation in the Middle Ages, and is located on the site of its second Hall.

Built originally as a pub (the Queen’s Head) circa 1825, at the time of parliament’s ‘road improvement scheme’, CDA’s 2016/17 renovations and extension of the building included restoration of the exterior brickwork, tiling and windows.
