About

Medics, Monks, Meat and Martyrs

St Bartholomew's Hospital arrived on this site in 1123, the meat market in at least 1174, the riotously badly behaved Bartholomew Fair in 1133, revolting peasants in 1381, and between 1305 and 1612 Smithfield was a place of execution. Packed with history and drama, there are many stories to be told, not just of the past, but of the present and an exciting future. Come and hear some of them with the City of London Guides. We would love to tell you tales of peasants, angry monks, body snatchers, great art and much, much more.
