James Maltby Bignall (1827-1885) worked in the practice of Sir George Gilbert Scott, the architect of St Pancras Station. The style of St Michael's is late Gothic Revival, in its size and height reminiscent of Northern European churches.

The use of bold vivid colour banishes the sterility that can accompany modernism without the loss of its hallmark simplicity and elegant line. This approach can be accommodated within houses whose external architecture has a very different heritage. Its achievement does not require a big budget
