About the Tour
London's nursery rhymes are full of references to real places, people and events, many of which can still be found in the City today. This walking tour explores familiar verses such as London Bridge is Falling Down and Oranges and Lemons, alongside lesser-known rhymes, using them as a gateway into the City's history.
Beginning at Charterhouse, the route explores sites associated with plague, historic London, churches, markets and historic streets before concluding at the northern end of the old London Bridge. Along the way, participants will discover how seemingly innocent nursery rhymes may preserve memories of lost buildings, local traditions and darker episodes from London's past.
What to Expect
The tour covers approximately 1.5 miles and takes place entirely outdoors. Participants should expect a leisurely walk with regular stops for discussion and storytelling. Opportunities will be provided, when possible, to examine buildings, streets and landmarks connected to the rhymes and their possible origins.
Accessibility
The route is step free. Some seating is available at locations near the end of the tour, although most of the tour involves walking and standing.
