This walking tour explores the stories and development of different ways of travelling through Greenwich Old Town across time. For its distinctive physical, social and historical character, Greenwich offers surprisingly a rich landscape of journey-making. The tour follows routes by river, rail, road and time.

The tour will end near Greenwich Power Station, walking distance to bus stops, DLR Cutty Sark Station, Maze Hill and Greenwich Stations.
The route is mostly step-free, although some pavements in Greenwich Old Town are narrow and may have mildly uneven surfaces

Greenwich has always been a place of movement, connection, trade, history, science and discovery. People have crossed, arrived, departed and passed through it. It is shaped by journeys.
Along the path, we look at the Thames waterfront, old ferries, docks and the modern pier; the age of trams before buses; the role of Greenwich Power Station in powering local transport; the first passenger railway from London Bridge to Greenwich, carried above ground on viaducts; and the later underground connections of the Greenwich Foot Tunnel and the DLR. A glimpse of aerial crossing adds a modern dimension to the story.
In one journey, we encounter the daily passage of dock workers, the royal crossings of the Thames, and the wider stories of sea navigation, adventure and exploration. With pubs, public art and riverside views adding further richness, it offers a mix of hidden local history and spectacular vistas. This walk invites you to experience Greenwich afresh, beyond its familiar landmarks.
The route of the walking tour is about 2.5 km long and will last for about 2.5 hours
