This walking tour explores the stories and development of different ways of travelling through Greenwich Old Town across time. For its distinctive physical, social and historical character, Greenwich offers surprisingly a rich landscape of journey-making. The tour follows routes by river, rail, road and time.

Greenwich has always been a place of movement, connection, history, science and discovery. People, ordinary and royal, have crossed, arrived, departed and passed through it. It is shaped by journeys.
Along the route of this walking tour, we look at the Thames waterfront, the original Billingsgate Dock, the modernised Greenwich Pier and the famous tea clipper Cutty Sark; the age of trams before buses and tubes; the role of Greenwich Power Station in powering local transport and the stories behind; the first passenger railway from London Bridge to Greenwich, carried above ground on a long stretch of viaduct supported by brick arches; the underground crossing of the Greenwich Foot Tunnel and why it is special to have DLR stations in Greenwich. A glimpse of aerial crossing adds a modern dimension to the story.
In one journey, we encounter the daily passage of dock workers, the royal crossings of the Thames as well as the stories of sea navigation and how the Maritime Greenwich connects with the world. With historic architecture, riverside views and public arts adding further richness, it offers a mix of hidden local history and spectacular vistas.
This walk invites you to experience Greenwich afresh, beyond its familiar landmarks.
The route of the walking tour is about 2km long and will last for about 2.5 hours
