A new mural celebrating the 750th anniversary of Croydon’s Street Market, A 1276 Royal Charter granted Croydon a weekly market which ran in the triangle around what we now know as Surrey Street, it is one of the oldest continuous markets in London. Commissioned from South London artist Vic Lee, the mural will share the surprising stories, facts and memories from the market’s remarkable history.

Surrey Street Mural by Vic Lee

Commissioned by CroydonCouncil, this new mural by South London artist Vic Lee celebrates 750 years of Surrey Street Market, one of London’s oldest continuous markets. Marking the anniversary of the 1276 Royal Charter that granted Croydon the right to hold a weekly market, the 18-metre artwork brings to life the stories, facts and treasured memories that have shaped the market across seven and a half centuries. Known for his distinctive signature style, Vic Lee is an artist, muralist, typographer, mapmaker and storyteller. The mural on Croydon High Street captures the spirit of the enduring community of Surrey Street Market, honouring its rich heritage while celebrating its place at the heart of Croydon today.
