Highgate is frequently romanticised as a tranquil, affluent village. However, this 130-metre ridge served as a sanctuary for radicals, rebels, and pioneers who resisted the social, political, and design norms of low-lying London. This tour explores the history of Highgate’s non-conformists and community resilience. Narratives and architectural landmarks are paired with curated scents.

Grade I listed Modernist apartment blocks retaining many original features.

Founded by Sir Roger Cholmeley, Lord Chief Justice of England, in 1565, Highgate School is governed as a single charitable foundation. Highgate School combines Victorian buildings (our Chapel, Central Hall classrooms and Sir Martin Gilbert Library) with modern facilities.
