Explore Feltham/Hanworth/Kempton area and discover West London’s secret histories!
Using the world’s largest working triple-expansion steam engine, did you know that vast volumes of drinking water were supplied to London between 1929 and 1980 from here? The engine, which stands as high as four stacked double-decker buses sits opposite its identical twin. You may have driven past it on the elevated section of the A316 coming into London without knowing what’s inside this grand scheduled monument surrounded by an active Thames Water site, now the Kempton Steam Museum.

Nearby, Hanworth Air Park tells part of the fascinating history of early British aviation. Now a park, it was a grass airfield in the grounds of Hanworth Park House between 1917–1919 and 1929–1947. Its claims to fame are visits from theGraf Zeppelinairship, and the manufacture of over 1,650 aircraft during the two world
wars. On the edge of the park sits a Grade II listed building, Fortescue House, which was the rectory for St. George's church.
