Step beneath the Ludham and Waxham Estate in Gospel Oak and discover The Undercraft, an extraordinary creative hub transformed from a former council estate car park into a thriving centre for artists, makers and community organisations.
Originally an underused parking area, the space has been reimagined as a unique example of adaptive reuse, demonstrating how overlooked urban infrastructure can become a vital cultural asset. Today, The Undercraft is home to 34 artist studios and 10 community organisations, bringing together visual artists, designers, writers, educators, youth groups and local residents in a dynamic and welcoming environment.
As part of Open House Festival, visitors are invited to explore working studios, meet resident artists and learn about the diverse creative practices taking place within the building. Artists working across painting, sculpture, ceramics, textiles, photography, printmaking and mixed media will open their doors to share works in progress, finished projects and insights into their creative processes.
The event offers a rare opportunity to experience a working creative community from the inside and to discover how a former piece of estate infrastructure has become a focal point for culture, collaboration and community life in Camden. Alongside the studios, visitors can learn about the wider organisations based at The Undercraft, which deliver arts, wellbeing, education and youth programmes throughout the year.
Located between Gospel Oak, Hampstead Heath and Belsize Park, The Undercraft demonstrates the important role affordable creative workspace plays in supporting London's cultural ecology while strengthening local community connections.
