About

Our Story

Founded in 1840, our church began as a major force for good in the local area. Part of Westminster was nicknamed ‘The Devil’s Acre’ by Charles Dickens due to great poverty, oppression, and injustice in the area. Almshouses and schools were built, orphans were cared for, and work schemes were organised for the unemployed.

We’ve sacrificially given to re-work our building to open it up to bless those around us. We named our coffee shop ‘New Acre’ in faith God will continue to do what he’s done for so many of us, offer real hope and fresh starts to the community through us.

The Chapel is a place of acceptance and transformation, where God’s word is faithfully preached with, we trust, Holy Spirit power (honouring and continuing the legacy of our notable preachers of the past). It’s a place where many nations, ages and backgrounds come to encounter Jesus, and find friendship and family in the heart of London.

One unique way we ensure this happens is by having the tastiest cooked meal in London every Sunday after the service.

What to expect

Take a trip through time and imagine yourself in a room filled with people desperate to hear the word of God. Our space seats a thousand people and has been home to preachers such as Campbell Morgan, Dr Martyn-Lloyd Jones, RT Kendall and Greg Haslam.

Our space will be open from 9:30-4 pm Monday, 11th - Tuesday, 12th September. It will be open 9:30-7 pm on Wednesday, 13th September. Our cafe will be open too, so why not pop in and have a drink from our popular New Acre Cafe?
The auditorium will be available for drop-in and self-guided viewing from 9 -1 pm.

From 1 pm-4 pm, we will have a member of the church on hand to answer your questions and guide you through the history of the famous Westminster Chapel. We plan to have some artefacts on show for you to see up close.

In the space, you can see our famous Grade II-listed pulpit and admire the beautiful architecture of the original design.

You will be able to see for yourself how we have blended the old with the new after our fundraised building project.

From 6-7 pm on Wednesday, 13th September, we'll also have Alex Scott-Whitby, the architect who led the refurbishment in 2020, there to take you through the project and the beauty of the building. That's one to look forward to.
