One of four Commissioners’ Churches by W and HW Inwood in Camden, St Mary’s is currently hidden by a scaffolding crash deck that is protecting the public from the risk of falling stonework. Threatened with closure and demolition in 2024, the Grade II listed church has been championed by conservation groups and community alike, for the importance of its social history as well as its architecture.

For the last 200 years, St Mary's Church in Somers Town has been an extraordinary site of social action, not least with the work of Fr Basil Jellicoe and the founding of the St Pancras House Improvement Society. In 2024, failing repairs to the church masonry and unsustainable scaffolding costs threatened the church with closure and demolition. The community, alongside conservation organisations including Historic England, SAVE, the Georgian Group and the Victorian Society have been working together with the Diocese of London to change that outcome and restore the church as a spiritual space that can continue to serve the community of Somers Town in the twenty-first century.
Alex Veal of ARTArchitects sets out the phased approach to saving St Mary's, starting with the restoration of the West Front. Since January, 200 years of grime has been removed from the front of the building and the brick and stonework has been restored. With work due to be completed in August 2026.
On 7 August 2025, the Department for Culture, Media & Sport and Historic England announced that St Mary's had been awarded £639,064 from the Heritage at Risk Capital Fund. The one-year fund prioritised heritage sites serving disadvantaged communities and which demonstrate strong local benefits. The work to restore the West Front is due for completion in August.
This year the government rolled out new Heritage at Risk and Places of Worship funding managed by Historic England. Much of the learning from our pilot scheme has been embedded into the new grants.
