Drawing Matter explores the role of drawing in architectural thought and practice. Central to our activities is the Drawing Matter Collection of many thousands of architectural and design drawings from across the world, dating from the Renaissance to the present day. In October 2024, Drawing Matter moved its activities and collection from Shatwell Farm to Smart’s Place, Central London.

Grade II-listed Georgian domestic building c.1760, formerly part of Bedford Estate. Interior refurbished 1925 to form lecture hall (restored 2014), library, bookshop and offices. Oak woodwork and green Doulton tiles line the staircase.

This year marks the 51st anniversary when the wholesale market ceased trading and moved to Battersea/Vauxhall area . The tour charts the evolution of Covent Garden, incorporating the piazza, the wholesale produce market, social residential areas and supporting neighbourhoods, and highlighting the social and commercial highs, lows and challenges.
