Scale Rule brings young people together with architects and structural engineers to design and build their ideal school space, with a focus on interacting with our natural environment. Pick a prompt card - a library in a treehouse, a canteen on the canal, a rooftop forest playground - then sketch it and build it in straws and paperclips alongside practicing professionals.
King's Cross St. Pancras
The session will take place in an open, studio space with floor-based group activities.
Developed by Scale Rule, a CIC working to widen access to built environment careers for young people from underrepresented backgrounds, in collaboration with Simple Works (structural and civil engineers) and Sordo Madaleno Arquitectos (architects), the session invites children and families to think like designers and engineers.
Through a series of design briefs, visitors can explore how schools, libraries, and other places of learning are shaped by, and shape, their relationship with the natural world. Activities include drawing and modelling (with straws and paperclips), encouraging children to test their own ideas about how nature can be brought into the spaces where we learn, and how buildings might respond to their surroundings rather than work against them.
The session is informal and drop-in, with activities laid out across the floor for visitors to explore at their own pace. The variety of activities means there's something for everyone, aimed at children aged four to fourteen, with briefs and activities pitched at a range of levels so younger and older visitors alike can get involved. Facilitators from Scale Rule will be on hand throughout to guide activities and answer questions.
