Housed in the Old Vic Theatre’s grade II listed former annex and built in 1958 in the Brutalist style by Lyons Israel & Ellis (refurbished by Haworth Tompkins in 2007), the National Theatre Studio exists primarily to develop work for the stages of the National Theatre. Working with artists across the UK and around the world, it provides the time, space and resources needed to develop ambitious, innovative work at scale with the stewardship and support of the National Theatre’s New Work Team. The Studio is also home to the National Theatre Archive, the repository which holds the organisation’s creative, technical and business records spanning rehearsal and production photographs to programmes, posters, prompt scripts and more.
Guided tours will include an opportunity to see rehearsal spaces, writers’ rooms and the script library used by New Work; alongside the Archive strongroom where the National Theatre’s physical collections are housed.
